It’s that wonderful, warm, sunny time of year again when we tend to slip off our shoes and instead our footwear of choice becomes the sandal. But, are you one of those people who is embarrassed to remove your shoes and expose your feet to the world? Instead of enjoying the sandal season are you fretting about your unsightly, discoloured and painful toenails?

If this is how you feel about summer sandals, don’t give up hope! You are not alone. You share your problem with over 35 million people in America alone. Yes, you are not the only person for whom yellow, brittle, and sometimes painful toenails are a problem. The name of this shared problem? Toenail Fungus.

Toenail fungus occurs when a particular type of fungus, known as a dermatophyte invades your body. Typically, the fungus gains access through the crack between your skin and nail bed. It is possible for the fungus to enter under the fingernails, but it thrives in dark, damp environments and so is much more commonly found in toenails. Once ensconced, the fungus sets up home beneath your toenail where it is out of reach and nearly impossible to deal with.

Avoiding Toenail Fungus

Like many fungi, the toenail fungus loves moist, warm places. This makes it an ideal candidate for you to collect from public places such as spas, swimming pools etc. Where it can survive for short periods in puddles on floors where anyone can pick up the spores and become infected.

Whenever you visit such places, always wash your feet thoroughly and dry them properly. Do not share towels, footwear etc.

Wear cotton or silk socks which will absorb moisture from your feet and always try to wear shoes which allow your feet to breathe. Sprinkling anti-bacterial powder in your shoes will also help.
